When the child is first born, the the speaker, withal the mother, does not know how to react, and it seems as though she is in take aback over the frustrates kindred. Not until she and her baby first communicate does the speaker light upon the possibility of connection amongst mother and child. Love, the first word in the poem is natura l in a mother-child poem, moreover in this ! specific one it is a truly bizarre first word. This poem does not seem to be about the love the speaker feels for her child, but the detachment between the speaker and her child. Although it is love, we dont know whose love is it. Is it the speakers, or someone elses? The mother does not cite it put one over if it is her own love, so the context to this line is curious. So why is the word there?
